The year 1977 saw the beginning of new era in Curchorem, Sanvordem with the formation of the Rotary Club Of Curchorem-Sanvordem. This idea was originally conceived by Rotarian Durganand Sanvordekar, a senior Rotarian of R. C. of Margao, who resides in Curchorem. In this regard Rtn. Durganand consulted his other colleagues from R. C. of Margao namely Rtn. Satyendra Naik, Rtn. Dr. Kerkar, Rtn. Dr. Gopal Vaidhya, Rtn. Dr. Narshinvha Naik and Rtn. Baptista Menezes who were instrumental in the formation of this club. They surveyed the area and prepared the list of 26 prospective Rotarians. There were many get togethers of these 26 members and ultimately in the month of July 1977 this Rotary Club of Curchorem- Sanvordem was founded.
The parent club that is R. C. of Margao accordingly informed Rotary International and received green signal and in the month of June 1977 all the chartered members held the meeting under the chairmanship of Rtn. Durganand and unanimously agreed that Dr. Sonu V. Kamat be the first president of the club for the year 1977-78. Further Rtn. Avadhut Laad was elected Vice President and artn Mahadev Sabnis as Secretary and Rtn. Ashok Kudchadkar as Treasurer for the Rotary year 1977-78.
On the 1st July 1977 was the golden day of official inauguration of his new club in the Guardian Angel High School Hall. Rotarian Durganand and many other Rotarian from Margao Club attended the function. Rtn Baptista Menezes was the chief guest who inducted all the Rotarians and also installed the Board of Directors.
The first meeting of the club was held on first Thursday of July 1977 at Sarvodaya Educational Society High School at 7pm. Some Rotarians from the R. C. of Margao were present. It took five more months for the club to receive the Charter from Rotary International and the same was received on 19th Nov. 1977 and the club no. 15634. Date of Charter 19/11/1977.
The club built the first Bus Shed at Cacumoddi. All the members of the club attended the District Assembly at Belgaum showing 100% attendance.
In 1978-79 the new Board of Directors were installed under the Presidentship of Rtn. Dr. Sonu Kamat at the hands of Chief Guest Shri Shankar G. Laad, the then minister of Government of Goa.
This second term was allowed to Dr. Sonu Kamat as there were hectic activities in the first year of his Office Presidentship. At the end of the year the club published its first issue of ‘Parijat’ and its Editor was Rtn. Dr. Rajendra Sanvordekar.
The club undertook many activities in the various following services such as ;
- Club Service
- Vocational Service
- Community Service
- International Service
- Youth Service
The club conducts R.Y.L.A Camps for the youth. The club built many bus shelters at Sanvordem Tisk, Dharbandoda, Near Sanguem Court, etc. for the convenience of the general public, Constructed Rotary Children’s Park at Cariamoddi, in an area of 400 sq. mts. open space allowed by the Curchorem Cacora Municipality. Traffic island at Bansai and Cacumoddi were also constructed. Public urinals were built at Sanguem Bus Stop and handed over to the Municipality of Sanguem for maintenance, Supplied plastic bags to the Curchorem Market Area for the proper disposal of waste in Seven Cement Dust-bins located at proper places in the Market Place. Also Two oxygen gas cylinders with regulators were kept in the hospital of Rtn. Satish kudchadkar for free service of the poor and the needy.
Every year four prizes to the students standing 1st in each standard at Chirkonoli primary school are given along with the cash prizes sponsored by Rtn. Vinayak Chodnekar. The club also gives scholarships to the students, disabled and poor people, every year top ranking students of SSC and HSSC from Curchorem center are also felicitated.
BESIDES we always undertake following projects year after year.
- Pulse polio immunization and distribute food packets and drinks.
- Blood donation camps.
- Celebrate all National and Public days.
- Hold Cross Country Race.
- Conduct Medical Camps.
- Bone Density Camp.
- Carrom Tournament.
- Cricket Game.
- Rotary Family Picnic.
- Felicitate two Occupation on 5th of September such as Teacher,etc.
- Talks on various subjects.
- Welcome G.S.E teams.
- Give T.V and V.C.D to old age home at Chandor.
- Water cooler to school and at bus stop for public.
- Started new Interact Club of the New Educational Institute at Curchorem whose charter was received on 23/6/2004.
- Held Jaipur Foot Camp in which The Mahavir Limb from Hubli gave a lot of help. The said Project cost was Rs. 1,53,000/-.
And above all we became the owner of our own premises on 23/03/2004 which was inaugurated at the hands of the District Governer Rtn. Dilip Salgaonkar and Rtn. Ramakant Angle of R.C. Cuncolim.
Special Note: The Rotary Hall is named “GOPINATH V. SATARDEKAR MEMORIAL ROTARY HALL” since Rtn. Shyam Satardekar contributed 50% of the total cost. Also Rtn. Ramakant Angle contributed Rs. 40,000/- for internal hall accessories such as chairs, etc.
As of today there are many Paul Harris Fellows in the club and also seven Paul Harris Sapphires and one major donor. These Rotarians donate $ 1000/- and more for the same.
The club sent Group Study Exchange Members in Mr. Pravin Parsekar to Argentina in the year 2003-04.
And lastly District Governer visits our club every year and has always commended the good work done by this Rotary club since inception i.e from 1st July 1977.
